Quaker Peace & Social Witness Central Committee meeting 30 November 2024
Quaker Peace & Social Witness Central Committee (QPSWCC) had its latest meeting to hear about Quaker work for peace and climate justice. In particular, it discussed our work to build peace and counter violence and division in Britain today.
What is this committee responsible for?
QPSWCC is the committee that oversees all our work to build a peaceful and sustainable world. This includes peace work in Britain and internationally, campaigns for climate justice, encouraging peace education in schools, supporting Quakers in taking forward their own leadings and activism (through our faith in action team) and supporting other like-minded organisations in Britain and in East Africa.
What did it do at this meeting?
At this meeting, QPSWCC heard in detail about the Peacebuilding in Britain programme, which accompanies Quakers and others to challenge division and conflict, especially by the far-right. They heard updates from the Quaker UN Office and from Conscience (the peace tax campaign).
The committee also discussed the process for nominating members of the sub-groups overseeing work on international conciliation, the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel, and in making grants to groups and individuals. They discussed reparations work happening across the Yearly Meeting, and heard about the planned joint conference between QPSW and the Quaker Council for European Affairs happening on 20-22 June 2025.
What happens next?
At future meetings, QPSWCC will continue to hear in detail about the various areas of work being undertaken, with our public affairs (parliamentary) work and the climate justice work scheduled for the coming months. It will also return to the matters of nominations and reparations, and hear about the history of Quaker peace and justice work.
