Quaker statement on PM's energy plan
Quakers in Britain have responded to the new Prime Minister Liz Truss's statement to the House of Commons on energy costs.
We support the government's efforts to provide additional support for those in need, although we believe much more needs to be done to help the most vulnerable, including through a fairer tax system.
We welcome the commitment to speeding up the roll-out of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. We urge the government to consider further ways in which it can bring about a just transition to a greener and fairer economy. We oppose all expansion of fossil fuels, including fracking, which will worsen the climate catastrophe. We ask the government to set a clear and rapid timescale for phasing out all fossil fuel extraction and use.
The government must help people in the UK and around the world who are worst affected by the climate crisis but have done least to cause it, including by backing an international loss and damage finance facility.
