Quaker meetings asked to consider call for solidarity with Palestine
Quaker meetings across the country are being asked to consider a call from Palestinian Christians for "costly solidarity" with their communities.
Quaker Peace & Social Witness Central Committee (QPSWCC) has reviewed Kairos Palestine II: A Moment of Truth: Faith in a Time of Genocide, issued by Palestinian Christians in November 2025.
Now the committee is writing to area meeting clerks asking Quakers to discern their response.
The Kairos statement describes the reality facing Palestinians as genocide, colonisation and ethnic cleansing, and calls on churches worldwide to stand with them.
It asks what "costly solidarity" means in practice.
The letter points to Britain Yearly Meeting's existing work on Palestine and the occupation. This includes:
- managing the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel in the UK and Ireland since 2002.
- agreeing in 2011 to boycott goods from Israeli settlements
- agreeing in 2018 to divest from companies profiting from the occupation.
- Meeting for Sufferings' acceptance in 2024 that apartheid is an accurate description of the situation in occupied Palestine,
- And in 2025, Yearly Meeting's discernment that the Israeli government was committing genocide in Gaza.
QPSWCC acknowledges that Quakers may not yet have discernment on all of the Kairos call, and that the subject can be difficult, including for relationships within communities in Britain.
It stresses that working for a just peace means engaging with these conversations, not avoiding them.
Area meetings are asked to use Quaker discernment processes to consider the statement, and to send their minutes via QPSWCC secretary Oliver Robertson.
