The Shared Quaker Story

In this course, Benjamin Wood will draw on material from his recent book Living Fountain: Remembrances of Quaker Christianity, to explore how Liberal Quakers can honour their uniquely Christian roots, while still valuing diversity of belief and language.
British Quakers are increasingly divided over matters of theology, belonging, and the status of Friends' Christian past. Unlike earlier decades, many contemporary Quakers hanker after a community unhampered by Christian theology. What might Friends be missing by re-imagining Quakerism in such post-Christian terms? This course argues for the loving retrieval of Christian language, as a way of strengthening our sense of shared community and deepening our spiritual experience. The goal of these explorations is to uncover a dynamic vision of Quaker Christianity, one committed to universal healing, reconciliation, and the crossing of religious and cultural boundaries.
