Reading the Bible With Early Friends

1 October - 12 November 2024, Online

In this course we will look at how early Friends both read the Bible inwardly and spiritually, and acted it out in their lives. Why were the writings of Paul and John so important to them? What is distinctive about the early Quaker approach to the Bible?

Working through this material will enable us to gain a deeper understanding of a distinctly Quaker understanding of the Bible. In particular, we will look at how early Friends read the Bible inwardly, and how they acted it out in the form of public signs. We will also consider why the letters of Paul, the Gospel of John, and the Book of Revelation were so important to the early Quaker movement. Finally, we will explore ways to engage with the Bible in our communities today.

The course, which runs over six weeks, includes recorded presentations, questions for reflection, written resources and a discussion forum. We will also meet together in three short live sessions to share our reflections and responses.

The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-20:00 (UK time) on Tuesdays 15 October, 29 October and 12 November.
