Quakers and Abolitionism in the American South
27 February 2026, Online
Though Quakers have long been lauded as the first organised abolitionists in North America, their anti-slavery efforts were preceded by a prolonged entanglement with slavery. This session explores this complex history in a region not often associated with Quakers, the American South.
Over the course of ninety minutes, this session will begin with a brief introductory background of Virginia and Carolinian enslavers and the roles they played within their broader religious communities, contextualize Southern Quakers' evolution from ameliorist to abolitionist stances, and conclude with a history of early Southern Quaker abolitionist efforts into the early 1800s.
