East Garston Quakers gather to celebrate light

Over the last year East Garston Quakers have held various community events in their wildlife garden. Recently they braved the elements for a Winter solstice celebration with a candlelit labyrinth, Candlelit Solstice Labyrinth Celebration, lanterns, seasonal crafts, mulled local apple juice and mince pies.

East Garston Quakers welcomed people to celebrate light with them in their wildlife garden

Visitors made decorations using moss and foliage they gathered in the Meeting House garden - majestic yew, holly and ivy. They decorated mini candle lanterns to carry around the labyrinth at dusk. During the afternoon local musicians Aniela Zylinski and George Dolling played piano and sang a range of medieval and traditional carols and winter songs, explaining the history and symbolism of the lyrics.

During the day the weather was blustery and wet but when it came to dusk, the wind dropped and the lanterns could be lit and the sky cleared so the stars were visible, echoed by the fairy lights around the path. George led the lantern-walkers into the labyrinth with a Wassail song to prepare for next year's growing season and crops. In the centre we gave thanks for the lengthening of the days and the comfort of the light.

It was a lovely afternoon, gently festive and seasonal and celebrating the light. East Garsden Friends are already planning for next year's celebration.
