Darlington Quakers repurposing property

Darlington is currently buzzing and Quakers have been involved in an inspirational repurposing of their property in the town.

The Borough Council is regenerating heritage buildings in the 'Quaker Quarter' on Skinnergate, using funding from the government's "Towns Fund". Two Quaker premises, previously used as shops are included in this project. One site fell vacant last year and our freelance Manager and warden Helen Whittington created plans for a pilot project which would change its purpose to a community hub. Teesdale and Cleveland Area Meeting agreed and it's already proving an invaluable resource for local groups – including a monthly Quaker-led 'Death Café' and a Repair Cafe run by Friends of the Earth. It's also very popular with local artists who are using the space to exhibit and sell their work including refugees who have sought sanctuary in the town.

Since taking over, Helen has found tenants for all seven offices in the Quaker Business Centre. When she arrived there was just a lone musician in the building. They've now been joined by another musician, a hairdresser, masseur, psychologist, Maths and robotics tutor and a beauty treatment salon. The communal office space has been decorated and refreshed.
Plans are now focusing on repurposing a room previously used as a teaching space.

A council arts event 'Create' was recently held in the town with the Meeting House and community hub playing host to local traders. The council will shortly be organising new signage for the community hub.

Much of the work in the town is in preparation for the bi-centenary celebrations to mark the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825 with the town famous as the birthplace of the modern railway. Quakers played a significant role in this world-changing event and we're looking forward to celebrating the 200th anniversary in two years time.

With a wealth of historical events to celebrate, this is an excellent form of outreach for local Quaker Communities. Do share your plans and successes on the Quaker Space Facebook page.
