Cornwall Quakers enjoy climbing the walls

Families in Cornwall are finding heart stopping new ways of sharing their Quaker spirituality.

They recently reached new heights when 17 children and young people managed to persuade 14 adults to join them in either shimmying up a climbing wall or jumping over boulders.

"It was a brilliant day that began with tea, cake and games before everyone headed off for even more energetic activities," explained Rita Stephen, the local development worker for Devon and Cornwall. "We've spent the last couple of years really focusing on building our communities and in particular re-imagining how a Quaker community might appeal to the children and young people of today. We did have a great idea of holding a meeting for worship at the top of the climbing wall, but that turned out to be more difficult than we anticipated as none of the climbers made it to the top at the same time!"

The day was organised by Rosie, a Friend from Falmouth Meeting. In future, further events will be supported by Greg Stanier, a new part-time children's and young people's worker who's role is being funded by a legacy from a Friend at Marazion Meeting.

"It's wonderful to see so many children and young people engaged in fun activities that build a sense of connectedness, community and confidence," Rita said. "And who knows, if we keep practising maybe we'll all make it to the top at the same time one day."
