Scotland is first UK country to ban smacking

Quakers in Britain welcome the ban on parents smacking their children which has become law in Scotland. This is the first nation in the UK to outlaw physical punishment of under-16s. Quakers value all moves to decrease violence in society.

Quakers join actions to mark postponed climate talks

As the original date of the COP26 climate talks approaches, Quakers in Britain have joined more than 60 UK faith representatives in calling on the Prime Minister to commit to ambitious emissions reductions in line with the need to keep global heating below 1.5 degrees.

Overseas Operations Bill passes through Commons

The controversial Overseas Operations (Service Personnel and Veterans) Bill has passed through the House of Commons. A judge-led review into the handling of allegations against troops will run in parallel to the bill.

Yearly Meeting registration opens

For the first time, Quakers in Britain will hold their Yearly Meeting online. Although the Yearly Meeting Gathering planned for August had to be postponed, on Sunday 15 November, up to one thousand Quakers will gather online for the highlight of the Quaker year.

Pandemic brings BYM staff changes

Over the autumn, Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) which brings together the Quaker Church, charity and organisation, has been working to meet the financial challenges of the pandemic. BYM's income will be down £3.5m and the cost of maintaining support for Quaker faith and witness will have reduced reserves by £2m.
