Quiet simplicity of meeting houses celebrated

When Quakers built Hertford Meeting House in 1670 they were more likely to be persecuted than praised for their style of building. This week it is one of 17 Quaker meeting houses to be listed or upgraded and preserved for the nation by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) on the advice of Historic England.

Swedish climate striker Greta Thunberg sparked a global strike to protest at the lack of government action to combat the climate crisis. Next week (22 and 23 April) she will be in London. Her two-day programme begins in Friends House, home of Quakers in Britain.

Settlements plan sparks protest

Benjamin Netanyahu announced his intention last week to annex Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine, if he is elected for another term as prime minister. In response Quakers in Britain are restating their 2014 call to the UK government to honour its commitment to the two-state solution and recognise the state of Palestine without delay.

Brexit needs cooperation not conflict

Amid political disarray and confusion, Quakers, among many others, are turning to quiet reflection. Today (Friday) should have been the day that the UK left the European Union. But Parliament has not agreed the best way forward. Tonight, an online Europe-wide dispersed meeting for worship will mark the moment Brexit was expected to take place (midnight Brussels time).
